Private Fred Flesher born 1889 Burley son of Edward a stone mason and Louisa. 1901 family at 168 Main Street. 1911 Fred is at Mossbrook Farm, Burley working for Thomas Clapham as a farm labourer. Served Northumberland Fusiliers 25thBtn. No 291786. Died of wounds 17.10.1917, Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. Mother living in Bradford.

Private Sylvester Grange born 1881 Dacre. Married to Mabel. 1911 farm foreman at Pannal House Farm, Harrogate. Resided Burley when enlisted. Served Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment 1/6thBtn. No.267728, died of wounds 27.10.1917, St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.

Private James Haigh born 1889 Burley son of Samuel a wool dryer and Jane. 1901 at 116 Main Street. 1911 James a railway porter living with relatives in Gateshead. Served Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment 2/4thBtn. No. 205387. Killed in action 26.3.1918, Arras Memorial, France. Widow Edith Haigh of 7, Belvoir Terrace, Ilkley.

Private Ernest Edlin Haxby born 1892 Burley son of Joseph a printing machine driller and Ann. 1911 Ernest is a jobbing gardener living at 13 Back Lane. Served North Staffs Regiment 7thBtn. No.202142 (formerly of Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment No.2854). Killed in action 26.8.1918 during the Iran campaign and commemorated on the Tehran Memorial.

Private Harold Hargreaves born 1894 Burley son of William Henry a printing engineer’s fitter and Sarah Isabella. 1901 family at 15 Fenton Street, 1911 family moved to Otley, Harold is a greengrocer’s assistant. Served Coldstream Guards 1stBtn. No. 10177. Died 14.9.1914, Vendresse British Cemetery, France.

Private Isaac Hindle born 1889 Burley son of John Thomas a wool packer and Alice Ann of 140 Pleasant Row. 1911 Isaac is a wool comber. Served Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment 8thBtn. No. 24752 killed in action 9.10.1917 Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Private Joshua Hindle born 1882 Burley son of James a labourer and Martha Ann Hindle of Station Road. 1911 at 8 Station Road, married to Emma, Joshua is an attendant at lunatic asylum. Served Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment 2ndBtn. No.6841. Killed in action 8.11.1914, Menin Gate Memorial. Emma remarried a Mr Dyson and moved to Baildon.

Private A Hobson possibly Albert Edward Hobson born 1890 Ilkley son of George a labourer and Hannah. Albert was a postman in 1912 when he enlisted with Royal Field Artillery 4th West Riding Brigade. His service record states he was 5’ 6 1/2” tall.

Private Harry Holmes (recorded as A. Holmes) born 1892 Newall son of Albert a carter and Annie. 1901 at 12 Fenton Street. Served West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales own) 9thBtn. No.37124.Killed in action 9.10.1917, Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Mother later at 245 West Terrace.

Private William Holmes born 1900 Burley only son of Wainman a butcher and Ann Holmes. 1911 family at 15 Farr Royd Terrace. Served Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry 5thBtn. No. 62540. Died 20.7.1918, Soissons Memorial, France.

Private Francis Johnson born 1886 Burley son of Fred a butcher and Winifred Agnes Johnson. 1911 Francis is a family butcher living at 144 Main Street. Served Scots Guards No. 5450. Died at Beuthen, Ober Silesia, Poland 29.3.1917. Commemorated on parents’ grave in Burley cemetery & Berlin south western cemetery. Married to Mary Ann of 2 Lewis Terrace.

Gunner A Keywood possibly Bombardier Arthur ErnestKeywoodborn 1891 Nottingham. 1911 Arthur is an electrical engineer living in Ravensthorpe, West Yorkshire. Served Royal Field Artillery 215th Brigade No. 850280. Died 28th May 1917 in Mesopotamia, Baghdad North Gate War Cemetery.

Private William Laycock (Lance Corporal) born 1896 Burley son of Joseph a joiner and Annie. 1901 family at 243 Main Street, later at 6 Lewis Buildings.Served Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment)6thBtn. No. 265234. Died 25.4.1918in hospital from severe shell wounds, Haringhe (Bandaghem) Military Cemetery, Belgium. Prior to enlisting William was an apprentice wool sorter with Messrs F.D. Moore & Co of Bradford. 

Private Henry Ledger born 1888 Burley son of Edward an Army pensioner and Eliza. 1911 family at 16 Main Street, Peel Place, Henry is an iron driller. Recorded as a whitesmith, 5’ 6 ½” tall when he enlisted. Served Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment 10thBtn. No’s.539 & 1038.

Before the war he was a fitter with Messrs Waite & Saville in Otley. Served Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment 8thBtn. No.12892. Missing presumed killed 29.9.1916, 2 days after his 21st Birthday, Thiepval Memorial, Belgium.

Trooper Ernest Long born 1879Burley, son of James a machine wool comber and Mary. 1891 family at 48 Sun Lane. Served Wellington Mounted Riles No.11/790 having emigrated to New Zealand c.1912. Died Dardanelles 9.8.1915, Chunuk Bair Memorial, New Zealand.

Private James Arthur Lund born 1897 Burley son of James a coachman and Margaret Lund of Wharfedale Grange Farm, later of Mount Stead Cottage, Ben Rhydding. James was a carter when he enlisted in 1912, 5’ 7 ¼” tall with brown hair and blue eyes. Served Army Cyclist Corps 17thBtn. No. 3229 (formerly served West Riding Regiment No.12869). Died of wounds 8.15 am 21.2.1916, Etaples Military Cemetery, France. His broken watch, cigarette case and a brass ring were sent home to his mother.

Driver Harry Mann born 1894 Burley son of Harry a master joiner and Ann Mann of 122 Pleasant Row. 1911 Harry is an apprentice joiner. Served Royal Field Artillery D battery 136th brigade No.781012. Killed in action 14.10.1918, Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
